There’s a saying ‘The adventure begins where the asphalt ends’ and Australia has plenty of off road caravan adventures waiting for you. While there are lots of amazing destinations in Australia, we’re highlighting 5 of the best off road caravan trips.
1. Flinders Ranges
The Flinders Ranges in South Australia are an iconic 4WD destination filled with amazing gorges and impressive mountain ranges. Stretching 430kms in the Flinders Ranges you’ll find an abundance of quiet spots, plenty of bushwalking, 4×4 tracks (many that are passable with an offroad caravan), creeks, gorges, wildlife, birds, national parks and spectacular views. The Flinders Ranges is also home to some of Australia’s most precious Aboriginal heritage.
The Birdsville Track, Strezelecki Track and Bridle Track deliver 4WD adventure and Port Germain, Willow Creek and Wilpena Pound are just some of the fantastic places to set up overnight.
2. Eyre Peninsula in South Australia
The Eyre Peninsula is not only one of the best off road caravan trips but also one of the most memorable. A triangular peninsula in South Australia, you’ll find plenty of campgrounds along the Eyre Peninsula, such as Lipson Cove, Perlubie Beach, Scotts Beach and Wattle Grove.
While there are some tracks you won’t be able to take the off road caravan, there are still plenty of spots you can. And with wildlife, lighthouses, fishing, beaches, bushland, hiking trails, 4×4 tracks, national park, stunning views and even the beautiful pink salt lake, there is plenty to see along the Eyre Peninsula.
3. The Kimberley
The Kimberley in Western Australia is on many bucket lists and delivers some of the best off road caravan adventures. Boasting stunning scenery, The Kimberley is huge and there is so much to see. Some locations to note:
- The Bungles
- Windjana Gorge National Park
- The Mitchell Plateau
- Bell Gorge
- Mornington Wilderness Sanctuary
- Manning Gorge
Not all roads will be accessible with a caravan, so follow road condition advice. Plus, research and watch the weather so you can narrow down the best time for you to travel into The Kimberley.
4. The Grampians
With rugged ridges and peaks, panoramic views and 4wd tracks The Grampians are a caravanning dream.
Only 286kms from Melbourne the Grampians are great for a shorter caravan adventure. There are 12 campsites scattered through the Grampians National Park, so plenty of choice on where to set up. And you’ll find plenty to explore which taking in the scenic drives, vibrant wildflowers, Aboriginal rock art, waterfalls, and walking tracks.
5. Talbotville Historic Township Camping Area, Victoria
The Victorian High Country is a beacon for 4WD adventurers and Talbotville, an abandoned gold mining town, delivers a perfect grassed area to set up your caravan. Best accessed via Dargo, and McMillan Road, Talbotville is on Crooked River in a far corner of the Grant Historic Area. There are plenty of 4×4 tracks for day trips and lots of exploring to do.
Keep in mind, McMillan Road gets very narrow and steep in parts and gets interesting if you meet someone coming the other way. A caravan will fit, but best kept to a small caravan and practice a trip in first without the caravan so you can judge the terrain for yourself and know what to expect.
Tip: If there’s been a lot of heavy rain, it can get a bit dicey, so best to tackle this one in the drier months.
If you are planning to go off road you must be prepared, with water, fuel, recovery equipment, spare tyres, puncture kits, etc. Our team can give you advice on what you’ll need and where to find it. Also, with no power at these 4WD campground locations don’t forget that you’ll need a caravan that has solar panels and batteries.
